It was all aboard a 1950s vintage bus for staff, students and special guests today as they launched Wyvern College’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, recreating the journey from Fair Oak to Eastleigh that has become part of the College’s history.

Wyvern first opened its doors in Eastleigh in 1958, with students travelling from the outlying villages on a fleet of buses. The Fair Oak site was built in 1966 but with increases to the population and the school leaving age, it still could not accommodate all students. Therefore, the journey to Eastleigh was part of school life for many students until 1978.

Passengers on the anniversary special, which was operated by volunteers from Southampton and District Transport Heritage Trust, included guests who used to make the journey as students, one of whom is the current Mayor of Eastleigh Councillor Maureen Sollitt. The College was also delighted to welcome two previous headteachers, Sheila Campbell and George Davies. With current students wearing school uniforms from different eras and the bus decorated in colourful bunting, it was a lovely atmosphere for sharing memories from the last sixty years.

Headteacher, Alan Newton, said, “All those who took part in this symbolic commemorative journey represent the proud evolution of an institution that has served the local community with distinction for six decades. We look forward to celebrating Wyvern’s rich heritage over the coming year and to advancing to the next sixty years!”

Additional events to mark the College’s 60th Anniversary include the Wyvern Story, a timeline of the last 60 years illustrated with memories and photos, and a celebration concert in July 2018.
