This year’s National Careers Week at Wyvern inspired students to think about the host of options available to them, with a range of visiting speakers and hands-on activities.

In tutor time students explored the Career Companion website, learning how to research potential careers.  Year 10 students enjoyed a special Apprenticeships Assembly by Dan Wareham from Eastleigh College, who outlined the alternative route to Further and Higher Education qualifications.

Visiting professionals included David Devenish, Chief Highways Engineer for Hampshire County Council, who talked to various groups, with hands-on experiments to help students make the connection between their learning at school and the world of civil engineering.

Science careers were well represented by Ben Ingliss-Smith and Christopher Habgood, Clinical Scientists from Southampton University Hospital, who are both studying for Masters qualifications as well as working.  Dr Vikki Otway, GP and Palliative Care Specialist, spoke about her role, whilst other groups learnt about work at Merck Pharmaceuticals from Immy Weatherhead.  Martial Arts Coach, Kevin Madden, provided an insight into sports careers and students had the chance to test their skills in a martial arts lesson.

Business skills were introduced during Enterprise Day, as Year 9 were challenged to design, make and market a jewellery range.  Off-site, Year 10 students attended the Higher Education Fair hosted by Barton Peveril, a fantastic opportunity to speak to representatives from over 70 universities and Higher Education providers.

Wyvern’s Careers Co-ordinator Katie Bruce, said “We’re extremely grateful to the visiting professionals who gave up their time to support Careers Week.  It’s certainly made students realise the wealth of careers and pathways open to them.”
