Wyvern College is delighted that it remains a ‘good school’, following a one-day Ofsted inspection earlier this term.  Three inspectors immersed themselves in College life on 13 March, undertaking learning walks, visiting lessons, speaking to students, staff and governors, and studying a wide range of college documentation.

Learning walks by the inspection team confirmed teachers’ high expectations, and behaviour for learning was a strong feature of all lessons seen.  Particularly strong learning and progress were identified in English, Spanish, Art, Music, Drama, Technology, Mathematics and Humanities, where inspectors saw high levels of challenge and a strong focus on literacy skills.  Pupils’ progress and attainment continued to be close to national averages and the progress of disadvantaged pupils is improving.

Students commented on the passion and commitment of their teachers, and spoke with pride about their College and their successes. Safeguarding and child protection procedures were considered to be highly effective.  The inspectors also commented on the curriculum, which is now better matched to the English Baccalaureate, but remains personalised to the needs of individual pupils.

Leaders were judged to have a very good awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of the provision, and middle leaders felt empowered and engaged in the process of improvement.  The governing body was identified as supportive and challenging. Consequently, there is a strong capacity to continue to improve the College further.

The inspectors highlighted the leadership of the Headteacher, Alan Newton, which has been much appreciated by governors, staff and students over the past 10 years.  In addition, the report recognised his work with the wider educational community, which has resulted in Wyvern playing a defining role in developing professionals both in and outside of the College.

Reflecting on the report, Mr Newton, said, “The inspection team were overwhelmingly positive about everything they saw.  The students were an absolute credit to the College, and the final judgement certainly reflects the phenomenal effort and continued hard work undertaken by all staff and governors.”
