Wyvern @Fair Oak 60th Celebration day
Wyvern celebrated the 60th anniversary of the opening of the current site on Saturday 11th July. We had a lovely programme of events including musical and dance performances from students present and past and our Team Romania were on hand to provide refreshments (including freshly made candy floss), face painting and good vibes.
In our library, our student History Club, led by Mrs Mc Nay, mounted their most ambitious exhibition to date – through the decades with Wyvern College – where as well as displays and music from the 1960s-2020s – they were able to present hundreds of items from the Wyvern archive – carefully sorted to the right decades. We also had boxes of old school record cards which we able to reunite with some of their subjects – often entire families.
The centre piece of the exhibition was the fantastic new artwork, the Wyvern Lantern, designed and made by Miss Rangel-Lemus, with help from students and staff. This piece will be hung in the lobby of the IT/Library building as a lasting reminder of this special anniversary.
Thank you so much to all the staff and students that worked so hard preparing and supporting on that day. And thank you to all our visitors that came along.
Year 11 Leavers 2026
Our year 11s left in style this year! Despite the heatwave, students braved the day and attended their final assembly in the gymnasium to try and keep a bit cooler. They still got to experience the fun of the traditional confetti salute, and signed each others shirts creating a memorable experience.
They then dressed up in their finest ready for Prom in the evening. It was a lovely farewell celebration for all.

Year 8 Praise Assembly
The end of term for Year 8 was a joyous one with lots to celebrate and revel in. Our end of term Praise
assembly was its usual mix of noise, chaos, laughter, games and chocolate. This term I asked tutors to
nominate a tutee to receive the 'good egg' award, with the criteria for this being someone who goes above
and beyond to help others, is polite, well-mannered and a role model for fellow peers to follow. These were
the worthwhile winners:
8P1 Sam, 8P2 Mia, 8G1 Alfie, 8G2 Alyssa, 8H1 Anna, 8H2 Oliver, 8D1 William, 8D2 Carys, 8C1 Tate,
8C2 Amelia
Mrs Munday and I also awarded three additional awards for pupils for whom we felt deserved an extra special
mention, they are:
Ava, Harrison and Dexter
Year 10 Mock Interviews
Well done to all the students that acquitted themselves so well at this week’s mock interviews. Thank you to all the volunteers who so generously gave up their time to act as interviewers and congratulations to Mrs Gough and Miss Allen for organising such a successful event.

History Club Competition
Well done to the Wyvern College history club for their fantastic participation in the Hampshire Archives Trust History Competition!
The students looked into the lives of elderly residents during the second world war. They found out some interesting tales about how life was for the community, stories about Polish and Jewish refugees, and how some residents spent time working in the mines as 'Bevin Boys'.

Their entry has been awarded Highly Commended Certificates with some high praise in feedback from the judges.

Periodic Patisserie

Here are photos of the periodic table cakes that Elizabeth and Poppy in Year 10 bade for Mrs Robert’s science class.
They did check for intolerances or allergies before they made and brought them in, and they were absolutely delicious and were enjoyed by the whole class.
Poem
One of our brilliant students Meg created this beautiful poem about love. It was certainly a highlight in her English class.
Football
Our amazing girls football team had cause for celebration as they played their socks off in the district cup final coming out as 3-1 victors!
Miss Fitzgerald was very proud of their conduct, their efforts and their teamwork. This is an amazing achievement and a first for Wyvern - well done ladies and lets hope we have some future Lionesses in our midst.
Open Athletics Track Meet

Well done to the Year 7&8 athletes (Evie, Annabelle, Megan, Bond, Idris, Jonah, Roisin, Freya, Sereyah, Alyssa, Fin, Jacob and Logan) who attended the first open athletics track meet at Winchester bar end.
The sun shone and Wyvern ran their hearts out with some great personal best performances.
Top Trampolining
Some of our lovely Year 7-10 students took part in the Southampton Schools Trampoline competition this weekend. Most of them are beginners to the sport so this was their first experience at a bigger competition. They all did brilliantly and were such a supportive team.
They competed against several other schools across Southampton some of which are National level competitors.
Their confidence was inspiring and as a team they achieved 3rd place overall!!
Well done to: Willow, Abi, Darcy, Gracie, Darcy, Alyssa and Ariela
Mathematics P3 Award
A huge congratulations to Fin in Year 8 on an exceptional achievement in this year's Junior Kangaroo Mathematics Challenge. Fin was the only Key Stage 3 student from the school to qualify for this competition and went on to earn a Gold Certificate with a remarkable score of 130 out of 135 marks.
This outstanding performance places Fin among the highest-achieving young mathematicians in the country and is a testament to his talent, dedication, and hard work. We are incredibly proud of his success.
Below are some words from Mr Pannell who nominated Fin for this award:
"I am absolutely delighted to congratulate you on your remarkable achievement in this year’s UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Kangaroo competition. To qualify for the Junior Kangaroo is an outstanding accomplishment, requiring exceptional performance in the Junior Mathematical Challenge.
However, your achievement goes even further. Not only were you the only student at Wyvern College to qualify for this prestigious follow-on round, but you have also been awarded a Gold Certificate for your exceptional performance.
The Junior Kangaroo presents students with some of the most challenging and thought-provoking problems in school mathematics, demanding creativity, resilience, and sophisticated problem-solving skills. Your success demonstrates not only your excellent mathematical ability but also your
willingness to embrace challenge and think deeply. Your achievement is one of which you should be immensely proud.
You have represented both yourself and Wyvern College with distinction and have set a truly inspiring example for your peers."
Paulton's Park Praise Trip
All our students who had consistently met our criteria for attendance, behaviour, etc were able to take part in our yearly praise trip. Over 500 students across the year groups were taken to Paulton's over a few days. The students truly deserved this reward for being such fantastic examples throughout the year. A fun, albeit very hot day was had by all involved!
Subject Awards Evening
Ks3 and Ks4 Subject Award Evenings were held in the last couple of weeks of term. Students received a certificate and medal for their exemplary work within their subjects. These students truly embodied the school values 'think, grow, care' and have been a credit to the school community.
Wyvern In Europe
Wyvern students have been to the continent this summer.
First off was our Year 8 trip to Germany, where there was a change this year with the destination being the Rhine Valley rather than Cologne. The first day was spent around the lovely city of Koblenz, with cable car rides, a boat trip and visit to the medieval Marksburgh Castle. The day rounded off with bowling and some anxious viewing of the England versus the DR Congo before dinner. The next day it was off the Phantasialand – the premium theme park in Germany. Managing the heat, the students enjoyed a number of amazing rides and the incredible range of food on offer. The teachers enjoyed the gardens!!
All our students had a great time and conducted themselves brilliantly – even when we suffered a three hour wait to get through passport control, catching a much later ferry than planned and arriving back at school at 3am.
A week later saw Year 9 & 10 students head off to France for the Battlefields Tour. This visit focused on some of the most significant sites in the Normandy region during World War 2 – starting with the famous Pegasus Bridge. Gold, Juno and Omaha Beaches, the St Mere Eglise Airborne Museum. Laurent Cemetery and Point du Hoc were visited, and students experience the 360 degree cinema experience at Arromanches and laid a wreath at the Normandy memorial. There was also time to enjoy some evening activities back at the hotel.
Our students were great throughout the trip – even when, like the students that went to Germany – there were delays on either side of the Chunnel crossing.
Book Awards
The annual Hampshire Book Awards reached their conclusion at the beginning of July. 6 of our Year 8 readers and Mrs Babbington travelled to Park Community School in Havant to take part in one of a number or voting events taking place simultaneously across the county.
Of the 4 shortlisted titles, the winner was My Name is Samim by Fidan Meikle - a heartbreaking yet hopeful story of courage, resilience and friendship, highlighting the experiences of young refugees and asylum-seekers.
The Carnigie Award saw our Year 9 readers take part in remote voting and the winner was Wolf Siren by Beth O’Brien - a retelling of the Red Riding Hood fairy tale.
Bowling and Rage Room
Our Young Carers group enjoyed a couple of activities to celebrate the end of the school year. Bowling in Eastleigh and a visit from a mobile Rage Room supplied by Rage Room Events.
In the later students were able to safely enjoy a crockery shy (sparing the coconuts) and created a superb piece of wall art by throwing paint balls at a canvas. Now we need to find it a prominent place in college.
NHS Visit
University Hospital Allied Health Professions (AHPs) visited our Year 10 Health & Social Care students this morning.
Zoe Oram who is the Education Lead and Frank Cheng 3rd year Physiotherapy Student at University of Southampton prepared a great workshop this morning looking at careers in the NHS.
Duke of Edinburgh Round Up
our first teams of Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award participants kicked off our camping season by completed their qualifying expedition in the beautiful South Downs, and we are delighted to share just how much they achieved.
Set against a backdrop of rolling chalk hills and wide-open skies, the group were treated to plenty of sunshine during the day, allowing them to take in the stunning views the South Downs are famous for.
However, the evenings brought a challenge of their own. The cold nights were far chillier than many had expected, providing an important lesson in preparation, resilience, and teamwork as tents were pitched and meals cooked in dropping temperatures.
This expedition was not without its emotional moments. There were times of tired legs, sore shoulders, and even a few tears along the way. Yet what stood out most was the group’s determination to keep going, supporting one another and refusing to give up when things felt tough. These moments are at the heart of the DofE experience and are often where the most valuable learning takes place.
One of the greatest achievements of the expedition was the group’s incredible walk taking in both Old Winchester Hill and Butser Hill in a single day. Tackling two iconic South Downs summits is no small feat, and conquering them back-to-back required real effort, perseverance, and mental strength. Reaching the top and looking back at how far they had come brought a genuine sense of pride and accomplishment for everyone involved.
By the final day, despite being tired and ready for home comforts, there was a clear feeling of confidence among the teams. They had navigated successfully, managed camp life, coped with unexpected challenges, and pushed themselves further than they thought possible.
Thank you for your continued support — we look forward to the remaining camps and walks for Bronze and Silver this summer.

Learning Support Refurbishment
EXCITING NEWS FOR LEARNING SUPPORT!
The school’s Learning Support area will be undergoing a refurbishment, creating a brighter, more welcoming space designed to support pupils’ individual needs. The updated facilities will include, small 1:1 rooms, dedicated meeting space, regulation space, teaching area, modern furnishings, and a calm environment that enhances focused learning and wellbeing.
We are all very excited about the redevelopment of our space on the top floor of the Art block which is being funded via developers’ contributions and Hampshire County Council.
As a result of this work starting at the end of May, the main location base for learning support will temporarily be housed in D2. This will mean that staff and students are not in the usual environment and will need to adapt as things will not quite be as exiciting.
We will encourage students to be as independent as possible during this time and only to use the temporary base in D2 when absolutely necessary or using their pass.
As a result of this we will also not be able to provide a dedicated Homework club in Learning support. However, we will ensure that LS staff are reallocated to the library from 3.00-3.45pm Monday to Thursday.
Mrs Weaver and the LS team.
Hatchlings launch
Hatchlings childcare celebrated its successful rebrand by hatching and caring for ducklings and chicks. The children were gentle and sweet, and helped the staff take great care of the birds until they were old enough to be rehomed to families in the community.
